When the Burger King Boat slammed into the Poplar Street Bridge and the minesweeper Inaugural sank in 1993, it marked the beginning of the end for a riverfront lined with restaurants.
KCI Construction was awarded the contract to build the “lid” over I-70 that stretches from the Old Courthouse to the Arch for $26.4 million.
The bill would put a grassy lid over the downtown depressed lanes of I-70 and reroute Memorial Drive.
The goal remains to have the highway lid and other improvements done in time for the fiftieth anniversary of the Arch’s completion in the fall of 2015.
