De’Eris Brown, 21, of O’Fallon, Missouri, has been charged with six counts in the shooting death of 9-year-old Jamyla Bolden.
No charges will be filed – at least for now – in Tuesday’s death of a toddler who apparently shot himself by accident with a gun in a Hanley Hills home.
St. Louis Circuit Judge Joseph Walsh III wrote in a 10-page ruling late last week that he reached what he called “the inescapable conclusion” that St. Louis County prosecutor Robert McCulloch “faithfully performed his duty” in connection with the grand jury.

“Mr. McCulloch failed to fulfill his duty of office. So a special prosecutor should be appointed to investigate the grand jury proceeding, itself. Not whether or not Michael Brown was unjustifiably killed. That’s not the question we’re asking,” Ellinger-Locke said.
The goal, says U.S. Attorney for Southern Illinois Steve Wigginton, is to send a message to the street.
“It doesn’t make sense to me to let somebody out early on a gun crime, and I think we have to take a tougher approach to that,” Circuit Attorney Jennifer Joyce says.
