If you’re in the mood for Mexican food, chances are you’re also in the mood to wash it down with that traditional Mexican concoction — a margarita. Some like them frozen and some prefer them on the rocks; some like fruit-flavored and some like the traditional lime juice margarita. But many will agree that the best margaritas in St. Louis are served up at one of these area Mexican restaurants. – Dianna Graveman

Las Palmas

4030 Woodson Road
St. Louis, Mo. 63134
(314) 427-7177

Las Palmas doesn’t have a fancy Web site to direct you to its location in a tiny strip mall near Lambert-International Airport in St. Louis. But word gets around about the fast service, colorful décor and, of course, the margaritas, served in a variety of flavors. Large, tasty and reasonably priced, the tangy margaritas and authentic cuisine will keep you coming back. Patrons have their choice of several tequilas, and the bartender isn’t skimpy on the alcohol. To add to your drinking enjoyment, live music will serenade you on the weekends as you sip your favorite margarita. Catering and take-out service are available.

Hours: Monday, Tuesday and Sunday, 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.; Wednesday and Thursday, 11 a.m. to 10 p.m.; Friday and Saturday, 11 a.m. to 11 p.m.

One of the best margaritas in St. Louis is hand-crafted by the Solis family at Pueblo Solis, or “Town of Solis.” Made from scratch with only a touch of mix, the margaritas at Pueblo Solis are considered the best in town by many. You’ll want to sample more than one flavor.

Hours: Monday through Thursday, 5 to 10:30 p.m.; Friday and Saturday, 5 to 11 p.m.; Sunday, 5 to 9 p.m.

Chava’s Mexican Restaurant

By the drink or by the pitcher, Chava’s Mexican Restaurant in historic Soulard serves up one of the best margaritas in St. Louis. Go with the traditional or try one of the many flavors — most hand-blended with real fruit: strawberry, mango, orange cream, watermelon, cherry, raspberry, pineapple, pomegranate or blueberry. Chava’s offers reduced prices during happy hour — every weekday from 4 to 6 p.m.

Hours: Monday through Thursday, 11 a.m. to 10 p.m.; Friday and Saturday, 11 a.m. to 10:30 p.m.; Sunday, 1 to 9 p.m.

A note about Pueblo Solis. “You’ll want to sample more than one flavor” … if you want to get smashed! Their drinks are so much stronger than a typical margarita, you had better brace yourself and make plans not to drive. At most restaurants, I can drink several margaritas and hold my own, but I had two drinks there and had to get help walking home (I live within walking distance). That said, they are freaking delicious, and the food is exceptional as well.

I live across the street from Chava’s It’s not worth going too. The Margaritas are basic you could prob buy mix at a store and make a better one at home. The food is basic. Nothing to exciting and the service is poor. If you like over priced canned Mexican food then this is your place. They do have good chips and Salsa and the bottle beer isn’t bad.
