FARMERSVILLE, Ill. (AP) — Officials with the United Mine Workers of America say the Crown III mine in central Illinois has laid off 37 coal miners.

District vice president Steve Earle says the union is devastated for the miners and their families. Earle says the union is trying to help them find other jobs.

The (Springfield) State Journal-Register reports that it isn’t clear what led to the layoffs at the mine near Farmersville, about 25 miles south of Springfield.

Crown III is owned by Springfield Coal Co. and operated by Tri County Coal.

The State Journal-Register says officials with Springfield Coal couldn’t be reached for comment.
