NEOSHO, Mo. (AP) __Newton County authorities say they do not expect to file charges in a fatal shooting of a teenager at a slumber party.
Fourteen-year-old Megan G. Reppond of Joplin died Monday after being shot in the head while at a friend’s Neosho home for the party.

Investigators say the homeowner told police he took the gun out of a safe to try out a holster he got for Christmas, and he did not expect the girls to go into the room where the gun was kept. But the girls found the gun and one of them, apparently believing it was not loaded, accidentally shot Megan.

Newton County prosecutor Jake Skouby told The Joplin Globe Tuesday that he doesn’t expect to file charges.

Newton County Sheriff Ken Copeland says 14-year-old Megan Reppond of Joplin was taken off life support Tuesday morning.

KOAM-TV reports Megan was attending a slumber party with friends at a home near Neosho on Monday night. The sheriff says another teen picked up a .38-caliber handgun that had been left on a piano and pulled the trigger. The gun turned out to be loaded, and the shot struck Megan.
