BELLEVILLE Il. (KMOX) – A Belleville man could get up to three years in prison after being convicted on a Hate Crime.

It took the St. Clair County jury only 12 minutes to convict 20 year old Cory Houghlan.

Prosecutors produced witnesses at his trial that said they saw Houghlan for no apparent reason approach an African American man on the parking lot of the Handee Mart in Mascoutah yelling racial slurs and strike him on the face.

The incident occurred in August of 2009.

St. Clair County State’s Attorney Brendan Kelly said the guilty verdict demonstrates that type of behavior is intolerable in the 21st century.

Sentencing is set for February 24th.
