EAST ALTON, Ill. (AP) — A southwestern Illinois man is jailed without bond on charges he tried to kill a woman in his house by beating her with a baseball bat, threatening her with a knife and saying he would suffocate both of them with natural gas.

Madison County prosecutors charged 42-year-old Freddie Ross of East Alton on Thursday with attempted murder, aggravated domestic battery and unlawful restraint.

Authorities tell The Telegraph of Alton that Ross hit the woman, fracturing her facial bones, after binding her to a chair with duct tape and telephone cord. She eventually managed to escape and call police.

She was taken to a St. Louis hospital. Her medical status isn’t clear.

Ross does not have a listed home telephone number or an attorney.
