ST. LOUIS (KMOX) – A plan by Missouri Congressman Todd Akin (R-St. Louis County) to send federal grant money back to Washington to help pay off the national debt has failed.

One million dollars had been set aside for a bike trail at the Archgrounds, money Akin hoped to send back to the capital.

Unable to do so, he tells KMOX’s Charlie Brennan that he’s done the next best thing.

“At the moment it looks like the best thing we can do is to cancel the overall program for the whole thing, just get rid of it,” Akin said.

Akin says communities need to begin saving money on their own in order to lessen the national debt.

Charlie Brennan’s interview with Todd Akin can be heard below.
