JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) — The city of St. Louis lost nearly 29,000 people during the past decade, a decline of about 8 percent of its population.

Census figures obtained Thursday by The Associated Press show St. Louis had a population of a little more than 319,000 in 2010. The Census Bureau was to formally release the figures later Thursday.

The census figures show that the population of St. Louis County also declined by 2 percent during the past decade to a total of just under 1 million people.

  1. why STL lost population says:

blame St. Louis city schools, & a mayor MORE obsessed with trying to get control/accountability of a police dept than trying to get control/accountability of the schools which would directly affect ALL of the city’s problems and bring back population, best thing he could do is legislate a way for the city to re-enter the county and put all the problems to bed.

  2. tony toombs says:

sorry city, . . we in the county want nothin’ to do with your unique city crime problems, its’ fiscal mismanagement of revenue, goofy promises on dumb pie in the sky projects that never develop or its cartoonish local elected leaders & their cronies!

    save yourselves
