ST. LOUIS, Mo. (KMOX) — The St. Louis Health Department launches a surprise inspection of the Missouri Athletic Club — in search of smokers.

The inspector showed up around 1:00 p.m. Monday —  a good time for a post lunch cigar, but reported finding not a whiff of tobacco in the venerable air of the downtown club.

Just a month ago, the MAC was caught in violation of the city’s smoking ban and fined a hundred dollars.

Health Department spokesman Harold Bailey says the fine has yet to be paid, and will be turned over to court.

It it takes three strikes to face a possible shut down as a nuisance property.  The count remains at just one violation.

The MAC needs to challenge this law in court. No way does the Missouri constitution allow smoking in a casino private club but not the MAC. And the MAC has plenty of lawyers to bring the action!
