O’FALLON, Ill. (AP) — One of two U.S. airmen killed last week in a shooting at a German airport is being laid to rest in his native southwestern Illinois.

Services for 21-year-old Airman 1st Class Zachary Cuddeback were held Saturday at St. Nicholas Catholic Church in O’Fallon. Cuddeback is set to be buried at nearby Scott Air Force Base, next to his grandfather.

Flags flew at half-mast across O’Fallon, and signs thanking Cuddeback for his service were held by residents and hung from businesses.

Cuddeback and another airman were killed when a man opened fire on a busload of U.S. airmen.

Cuddeback was assigned to the 86th Vehicle Readiness Squadron at Ramstein Air Base in Germany.

He moved to Virginia in 2003, but his family says he considered Illinois home.
