ST. LOUIS, Mo. (KMOX) — The landmark musical “Showboat” won Outstanding Production of a Musical at the 6th Annual Kevin Kline Awards last night. The black tie ceremony was held at The Repertory Theater in front of an audience of over 500 people.

Michel Bell, who played Joe in The Muny’s “Showboat,” won Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Musical.

The highlight of the evening was local actress Kari Ely, a previous nominee who had never won a Kiline Award before. Ely won twice this year for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Play for “Long Day’s Journey Into Night” at the Muddy Waters Theater and Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Play for “Why Torture Is Wrong, and the People Who Love Them” at the Hot City Theater.

There were 22 awards given out. Stages won five awards and The Muny won four awards. The Rep, The Shakespeare Festival of St. Louis and the Upstream Theater each won three awards.
