One man is dead, another in custody following an argument that escalated into gunfire in Jefferson County.

The victim, believed to be in his mid-30’s, has not been publicly identified.

Jefferson County Sheriff Oliver “Glenn” Boyer says the man went to a home in the 1800 block of State Route Z in Pevely Sunday night.

Sheriff Boyer says the man’s estranged wife asked him to leave the property, which he did.

But the man returned a short time later and got into an argument with his wife and several other people.

Shots rang out, and when deputies arrived the man was lying in the driveway with a gunshot wound to the upper torso.

He was later pronounced dead at a local hospital.

Investigators later took a 64-year-old man into custody, but no formal charges have been filed.
