ST. LOUIS (KMOX) – The nation’s top college wrestling coach of 2011 is headed to Maryville University to create a Division II program there.

The university announced Thursday the hiring of former University of Nebraska-Omaha head wrestling coach Mike Denney, effective June 1st.

UNO won the NCAA Division II wrestling title for the past three years, and five out of the past six. Denney was voted the 2011 InterMat Coach of the Year—an award that covers all NCAA divisions of wrestling.

UNO dropped its wrestling program when the university made the jump to Division I competition.

In a Maryville University news release Denney says he’s excited to make the move to St. Louis, along with many of his student-athletes from Omaha, “It isn’t every day that an experienced coach gets the chance to create a college wrestling program from scratch, but that’s exactly the opportunity I’ve been blessed to receive at Maryville.”

Denney had a record of 314-111-5 in dual matches over his 32 seasons coaching at UNO.

This is an exciting opportunity for both Coach Denny and Maryville. It looks like a good match- the entire campus is behind Coach Denny and the students coming from Omaha .
