ST. LOUIS (AP) –  New federal data shows that St. Louis ranks second only to New Orleans when it comes to youths killed by gunshots.

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports that the city’s murder rate for people ages 10 to 19 was more than three times the average for major cities.

The data from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention was released Thursday.

St. Louis had 46 youths killed by gunshots in 2006 and 2007, a rate of 50 deaths per 100,000 population.

New Orleans had a rate of 106 deaths per 100,000.

The average for major cities was 15 per 100,000.

Along with the right to bear arms, which I do believe in, being a legal gun owner, comes the RESPONSIBILTY of safeguarding our children and others from the dangers of those very same guns. Rule 1: There is no such thing as an unloaded gun. Rule 2: You are responsible for your gun. No excuses.

If you don’t understand or agree with these rules, then turn them into the first police officer you see, because you should not have a gun, rights or no rights.

I doubt that there are more guns per citizen in St. Louis than there are in Jefferson County. Could the difference be the glorification of the “Gangsta” lifestyle?
