BRANSON, Mo. (AP) — The storm system that carried the deadly tornado to Joplin also brought heavy rain, prompting the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to open floodgates in southwest Missouri.

The corps says 10 floodgates were open 1 foot on Monday at Table Rock Dam. Floodgates upstream from Beaver Lake also were opened. The corps says lakes along the system are full, requiring it to open the floodgates.

The corps says the releases will not cause flooding below the dam. But Taney County Emergency Management Director Chris Berndt says some houses along Lake Taneycomo will be affected by the releases.

The Springfield News-Leader reports that corps is advising people along Lake Taneycomo that releases from Table Rock could increase substantially.
