CENTRALIA, IL (KMOX) –  A Metro East man is now charged with murder and assault in two separate cases.

Centrailia Illinois Police say 22-year old Christopher Newcomb killed 65-year old Frank Augustine and seriously injured his elderly landlord by stabbing her numerous times.

Investigators received a call for an assault in the six-hundred-block of North Walnut and found the female victim. Later that day,  police responded to the FOTOZ Color Lab on North Elm and found the body of Frank Augustine.

Before eight this morning, Christopher Newcomb was found at the America’s Best Inn on East Noleman, he allegedly resisted arrest but was eventually taken into custody.

Centralia Police Chief Larry Evans tells KMOX  Newcomb confessed to both crimes. He is being held in Marion County, charged with murder, aggravated assault and resisting arrest.

    unfortunately from what ive heard as of july 1st illinois will no longer have the death penalty

    If he was officially charged before july 1st could they still not seek death?
    Frank was a good friend, he will be missed ! .
