ST. LOUIS COUNTY, MO(KMOX)-Priceless Civil War-era coins have been stolen from an exhibit.

President of the Museum of Transporation on Barrett Station Road in St. Louis County Dave Hahner says they’d just been loaned 27 civil war-era gold and silver U.S. coins from the Money Museum in Colorado last Wednesday.  Workers put them on display Friday evening.  He says staff noticed that six were missing sometime Saturday.

Hahner says the coins, minted between 1848 and 1861, are worth hundreds of thousands of dollars but are really priceless pieces of history.

Hahner says he does want the culprit or culprits to know that if they return the coins, “We won’t press charges, no questions asked.”   A reward is being offered from  Crime Stoppers.

Hahner says they did not have video surveillance in the exhibit area in the museum’s Earl C. Lindburg Automobile Center but he says the museum’s board will meet next week to discuss adding a video monitoring system.

The remaining coin exhibit will run through June 30th.
