WASHINGTON D.C. (KMOX) – Illinois lawmakers are asking the Army Corps of Engineers to speed up the approval process for upgrades to the Metro East levee system.

U-S Senators Dick Durbin and Mark Kirk and Congressmen Jerry Costello and John Shimkus signed a letter to the agency stressing that communities are ready to move forward with improvement plans and hope to avoid high insurance rates.

Last month, the Southwestern Illinois Flood Prevention District Council released a 5-year, $161 million plan to upgrade the levee systems in Madison, St. Clair and Monroe Counties to the 100-year flood protection standard.
