UNIVERSITY CITY, Mo. (KMOX) –  University City mayor Shelley Welsch will host a first-ever “Regional Initiative on Youth” forum Tuesday night.

It’s open to the public and begins at 6 pm at the Heman Park Community Center, 975 Pennsylvania Ave. in U. City.

“It goes back to my feeling in University City that we perhaps did not do enough to provide a wide range of varied opportunities for our young people,” Welsch tells KMOX News.

Her city was the epicenter for a protest by business owners this past spring, who complained that large roving groups of youth throughout the Loop were keeping customers away.

But Mayor Welsch says she’s opened up her forum to mayors and other community leaders from throughout the entire region.

“Young people don’t pay attention to invisible municipal boundaries,” she explains.  “Young people move across the whole region.  Kids today can get together much quicker in far greater numbers.”

She says that’s due to technological advances like cell phones, e-mail and texting that allows kids to get together quickly.
