EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. (AP) — A man accused of beating a southwestern Illinois woman to death in her apartment told investigators during one version of his story that he pummeled the victim with a baseball bat in self-defense only after she first used the bat on him.
Scott Moore told investigators during a taped interview played for jurors Wednesday that the deadly July 2009 confrontation with Catherine Fowler came during a dispute about money he owed her for cocaine.
Moore is charged in Madison County with first-degree murder, armed robbery and home invasion in Fowler’s death.
During the police interrogation, Moore first said he was riding his bike and stopped by Fowler’s apartment to get some water and use the bathroom, only to find her body.
Moore has pleaded not guilty.
