CAHOKIA, Ill. (AP) __ Police say a man who witnesses say was naked while firing a gun into the air near a southwestern Illinois apartment complex managed to speed away from law enforcers and into Missouri.

It isn’t clear if the man sought in connection with the gunshots early Friday is in custody. Cahokia police haven’t returned messages seeking updated information.

Police say they fielded a call from the Cahokia apartment complex that a man wearing only shorts was outside waving a gun. As police responded, another witness said the man had shed his shorts and was firing into the air.

The man then sped from police into St. Louis across a Mississippi River bridge, by some accounts traveling at triple-digit speeds. Officers stopped their pursuit out of fear for drivers’ safety.
