HERSCHER, Ill. (AP) — Company officials say an explosion that left five people injured at a plant in north-eastern Illinois happened during a welding job.

Police received a call about an explosion at Natural Gas Pipeline Company of America in Herscher before 10 a.m. on Tuesday. Two people were seriously injured.

Kinder Morgan owns the plant. Company Spokesman Joe Hollier says the flash fire was extinguished immediately. The cause is under investigation.

Kankakee County Sheriff’s Department spokesman Ken McCabe says the explosion wasn’t due to a gas leak. He says all five people were transported to a hospital in Kankakee. There’s no word on their conditions.

Herscher is community with less than 2,000 people about 60 miles southwest of Chicago. The plant is located on a county road away from the community’s business district.
