KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) __ Federal prosecutors say they will seek a life sentence for a Catholic priest accused of producing child pornography in Missouri.

Prosecutors disclosed their sentencing goals Thursday in a motion asking that the Rev. Shawn Ratigan remain in jail until his trial.

The Kansas City Star reports that Ratigan pleaded not guilty Thursday in his first federal court appearance on 13 counts of production, attempted production and possession of child pornography.

Because Ratigan hasn’t been able to make bond on three Clay County counts of possessing child pornography, U.S. Magistrate Judge Sarah W. Hays said she would defer not rule on the detention motion unless it became necessary.

And Bishop Finn wanted to keep him in the priesthood. Un-monitored. Around children. Catholic-style.

  2. Judy Block-Jones says:

Before we need to even think about sentencing for Ratigan… It is imperative that “ALL” who have knowledge or have witnessed these crimes against kids, need to report it to the police and prosecutors.

This is not just about one criminal… several are involved in covering up these crimes against kids.

….catholics, concerned citizens, and parents can do something, and you are not helpless. You can urge prosecutors to do a real independent grand jury investigation into the KC-St Joe diocese for sex crimes against kids… this abuse by Ratigan did NOT have to happen if Bishop Finn would have done the right thing in the first place.

Crimes have been committed by more people than Ratigan, and in order to get this abuse stopped and to protect kids, ALL who are responsible need to be held accountable. Otherwise they go on with business as usual. And kids will not be safe…
