VALLEY PARK, Mo. (AP) –  The chief of the Valley Park Fire Department says problems with hydrants were not the reason that three homes were destroyed in a blaze.

The fire broke out in a vacant house Wednesday morning in the St. Louis County town and spread to adjoining structures.

Fire Chief Rick Wilken told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch that crews were aware that some hydrants in that part of town don’t supply enough water for big fires, so they tapped into a bigger water main a block away.

But at least one resident whose family lost its belongings in the fire believes the delay cost them their home.

No one was hurt in the blaze, which remains under investigation.
