EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. (AP) — A southern Illinois man has died in an all-terrain vehicle accident on the first day of the archery deer hunting season.

Madison County authorities say 68-year-old Edward Schoonover of rural Edwardsville died Saturday when his ATV flipped over at a creek crossing. Madison County Sheriff’s Capt. Brad Wells says Schoonover and his brother finished hunting and were returning from the woods when the accident happened.

Wells says the ATV flipped and threw both men off. Schoonover’s brother wasn’t seriously injured and ran from the wood to get help. Schoonover was pinned under the vehicle. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Archery deer season started Saturday in Illinois and lasts through Jan. 16.

Schoonover’s daughter Lisa Adams says her father hunted for 40 years and was a retired truck driver.
