PEORIA, Ill. (AP) — The philanthropic arm of Peoria-based Caterpillar Inc. has pledged $5 million to Nature Conservancy’s Great Rivers Partnership.

The gift from the Caterpillar Foundation goes toward a program with the goal of sustaining the world’s great rivers.

The Nature Conservancy launched the first phase of the project in 2007 with an initial $12 million investment from the Caterpillar Foundation. The recent pledge allows the project to expand its work to more of the world’s great river systems.

The project has worked in China, Brazil and the United States on efforts to conserve and restore river ecosystems and ensure clean water for river communities.

Caterpillar Chairman and CEO Doug Oberhelman says the project has a broad network of stakeholders that understands the ties between a sustainable environment and a sustainable economy.
