GRANITE CITY, Ill. (KMOX) –  Authorities are trying to figure out what a Granite City man was doing when he was electrocuted early Friday morning.

34-year-old Mark William Becker was found dead on Cut Street in unincorporated Alton shortly after midnight.

It was determined that he had come into contact with overhead power lines after they had been cut from a pole.

Becker was shocked with a fatal dose of electricity.

A report from Madison County coroner says investigators have been unable to determine “any legitimate or lawful activity” that could have led to Becker’s death.

The sheriff’s department is investigating, and they’re awaiting results of drug and alcohol tests on the victim.

I am very saddened to hear of the death of Mark Becker, my family, and I watched Mark Becker grow up, in the Granite City area, he was a sweet young man, always a pleasure to talk to. Before this article even hit the news room at around 7:30 this morning a Pontoon Beach Police told a good friend of mine about what had happened, and then he told my son, shocks waves went through the community, that Mark Becker was killed, it was also siad his father, Jack Becker was with Mark at the time of the death. Its a sad tragedy, I just hope all the young men out there, see what can happen in a blink of an eye, and that in an instant you can be killed, we will forever, miss Mark, he will always be in our thoughts. We will also keep his Family in our Prayers.

What a chump! If you’re going to be a damned thief at least go for art, gold, silver or diamonds. Copper? Yeah this guy was a real winner all right…
