BELLEVILLE, ILL.(KMOX)-Belleville Police say a woman who’d stopped on the parking lot of Eckert’s to use her cell phone Wednesday afternoon, was nearly carjacked.

Just before 4pm, police were called to Eckert’s on Greenmount Rd. Police say the unidentified man tried to take the woman’s vehicle but employees of Eckert’s helped her.  When that carjacking failed, the suspect took a truck belonging to one of the employees.  He reportedly didn’t get very far in that vehicle and instead ran into a nearby wooded area.  The St Clair County Sheriff’s brought in their K-9 unit and thermal imaging but could not find the suspect.

The suspect is described as a white male, 40 to 50 years of age, a heavy build with a large beer belly.  When he was last seen, he was wearing blue sweatpants, NO shirt and rubber boots.  He had a bandana on his head an brown to reddish facial hair.

Belleville Police Detectives say they are working several leads.  Detectives would like to talk to anyone with information and anyone who may have seen the suspect in the area of Eckert’ s in the afternoon hours of November 2nd.
