ST. LOUIS (KMOX) –  Two people are hospitalized with critical injuries following an early-morning hit-&-run in Clayton.

Police chief Tom Byrne tells KMOX News that both victims were in the street standing next to their vehicle when they were struck around 1:30 am Wednesday.

In an unusual twist, Chief Byrne says the man behind the wheel stopped and offered help, saying he had “witnessed” the accident.

The driver then fled the scene before police arrived, but officers tracked him to his home and found his car parked there with a smashed windshield.

The unidentified man was taken into custody for DUI.

While serious, injuries suffered by the man and woman who were struck are not believed to be life-threatening.
