ST. LOUIS COUNTY (KMOX) – A wrong-way driver died Friday afternoon when he struck another vehicle head-on, while on Interstate 55 near Bayless.
According to a crash report from the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 74-year-old Giovanni Patania of St. Louis was driving his 2002 Oldsmobile Alero south in the northbound lanes.
“His vehicle hit a Jeep Wrangler driven by a female. The female, according to our investigation, had moderate injuries,” Missouri Highway Patrol Corporal Jeff Wilson said.
It appears the Jeep’s driver, 25-year-old Jamie Eime of High Ridge, Mo., tried to avoid the collision.
“We believe she saw the vehicle coming and attempted to break,” according to Wilson. “She couldn’t swerve or anything but attempted to break.”
Investigators are trying to figure out where the man got onto the highway and why he was going southbound in the northbound lanes.
