MADISON, Ill. (KMOX) – A neighborhood watch captain in the Eagle Park neighborhood of Madison, Illinois dies in a fire.

Neighbor Del Jones says the fire broke out shortly after three Sunday morning inside the Terry Street home of the man’s mother, “She lost her son. She lost her home. I’m just praying to God to keep her mind and keep her safe. Right now she’s in the hospital. We’re praying she gets better and comes home safely to us.”

Jones calls the deceased a kind man who was her brother’s best friend.

The Madison County Sheriff’s Department says it appears the fire started in a kitchen area, and no foul play is suspected.

The name of the deceased has not been released.

The Illinois State Fire Marshal’s Office is assisting Madison firefighters with the case.
