NORMANDY, Mo. (KMOX) – A big construction project is underway near the south MetroLink station on the campus of the University of Missouri St. Louis.

Trains were shut down between the Wellston and North Hanley stations over the weekend, so concrete could be poured.

Metro Transit engineer Chris Poehler explains what’s happening, “The overall goal is to put in tracks we call an interlocking, to connect the two tracks here. This will allow us to run our trains around any disruptions or maintenance activities we have, so we won’t disrupt service for our customers.”

Poehler says shuttle buses will be used to get MetroLink riders between affected stations on weekends when construction takes place.

The interlocking is expected to be completed by early 2013.

Poehler says the price tag of the project will be “several million” dollars.
