WENTZVILLE, Mo. (KMOX) – Wentzville police detectives say Saturday night’s shooting at a trivia night was quote,  “tragically unintentional.”

After hearing media reports of a person being shot during clean-up at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, a man came forward Sunday morning and shared his story with police.

Officers say the case will now be turned over to the St. Charles County prosecutor’s office to determine if charges will be filed or not.

The 23-year-old man struck by the bullet is in serious but stable condition.

A gunman opened fire in a Wentzville church Saturday night, leaving one person  seriously injured.

Police say it happened at St. Patrick Catholic Church during a trivia night benefit for a Wentzville woman with cancer.

A shot was fired while balloons were being popped near the end of the evening.

Everyone there at the time of the shooting  was held until they could be interviewed and searched.

Anyone who left the church before the shooting is asked to call Wentzville police.
