EAST ST. LOUIS, Ill. (KMOX) – Two homes have been totally consumed by an early-morning fire at Kansas and 21st Streets in East St. Louis.
Thick smoke could be seen rising into the sky from several miles away.
Crews were called to the scene around 5 am after large flames were seen shooting from the roof of one of the homes.
The original call came in as a car fire at that location, but the flames quickly spread.
At first fire officials weren’t sure if there were people were inside or not, but they now say it appears the homes were vacant at the time and the cause of the fire may be suspicious in nature.
The firefighting effort was hampered by the fact that the East St. Louis fire department was responding to another fire in a different part of town.
No injuries have been reported.
