ST. LOUIS, Mo. (KMOX) — The news from the St. Louis Cardinals injury list is not all bad since OF/IF Allen Craig has been getting closer to returning. Excitement about Craig’s possible early return recently began with him taking a number of live at-bats, but now he has spent some time in the field as of Thursday morning.
Though the original notion was Craig would probably miss the beginning of the regular season after getting surgery just before the Thanksgiving holiday back in November, the 27-year-old told reporters at the beginning of spring training that he was hopeful of an early return. KMOX Sports learned from GM John Mozeliak last weekend on Sports on a Sunday Morning with Ron Jacober that his return by Opening Day on April 4 was a distinct possibility.
Following his game with the Cardinals minor league club on Thursday morning in which he slugged a home run, Allen Craig talked with KMOX Sports Director Tom Ackerman about his progress.
Craig, one of the many heroes from the Cardinals 2011 World Series championship for his clutch hitting plus catching the final out of Game 7, had a couple of screws placed in his right kneecap to repair damage done last season when he crashed into a fence at Houston.
