BELLEVILLE, Ill. (KMOX) —The suspicious device that shut down a major Belleville street for about four hours this morning turned out to be a pipe.

A spokesman for the Illinois Secretary of State’s office tells KMOX a bomb squad was able to remove the caps from the one-foot by one-inch pipe to confirm it was not an explosive device.

It’s believed the pipe fell off a vehicle on Old Collinsville Road near West Avenue. It was found on the road at about 7:30 Wednesday morning. The roadway was reopened around noon.
