ST. LOUIS (KMOX) –  The owner of the old Del Taco on Grand near St. Louis University, which supporters fought to keep standing due to its unusual “spaceship”-like structure, now denies that he has new tenants lined up to take over the abandoned building.

KMOX News reported Thursday that Starbucks and Chipotle were ready to go forward with redevelopment plans.

That was confirmed at the time by St. Louis Alderwoman Marlene Davis, one of those who’s spoken out in favor of saving the unique building from the wrecking ball.

But building owner Rick Yackey wouldn’t confirm or deny the report, saying at the time he didn’t want to talk about it.

Then, Yackey did speak out after KMOX aired the story, saying there are no tenants lined up after all.

No Starbucks.

No Chipotle.

Yackey declined to talk about negotiations, but did allow that the only construction on-site right now is to dig up buried gas tanks.

But he insists that has nothing to do with getting the building ready to be used again.
