ALSIP, Ill. (KMOX) – Investigators have charged a third person in connection with Tuesday’s abduction of 5-year-old heart patient Porter Stone from St. Louis Children’s Hospital.
Reporter Mike Krauser with CBS-Chicago radio affiliate WBBM attended a press conference Wednesday morning.
He says more details were revealed about the circumstances surrounding Porter Stone’s recovery, and the subsequent arrests.
“Police developed information that the vehicle the father, the grandmother and the boy were travelling in was, in fact, in Alsip Illinois,” Krauser reports, adding that tips called in based on the Amber Alert information that was flashed on billboards throughout the Chicago area. “They found the vehicle in a hotel parking lot and found out that the suspects had registered at the hotel using their own names.”
Officers arrested the boy’s father, 33-year-old Jeffrey Stone of California, along with Stone’s mother, 59-year-old Rhonda Marie Matthews.
Both have now been officially charged in St. Louis with felony counts of kidnapping, interference with custody, and child endangerment.
Also taken into custody at the hotel was a 37-year-old California woman, Heather Minton, whose relationship to the other two suspects was not immediately clear.
Police also recovered a second juvenile at the scene, who’s now been placed into protective custody.
As for Porter Stone, who suffers from cardiomyopathy, congestive heart failure, and is at the top of the waiting list for a heart transplant?
He was recovered safe and sound.
“He was taken to Christ Hospital in nearby Oak Lawn where he is said to be doing well,” says Krauser. “He still had enough medication.”
There had been concerns when his father allegedly kidnapped him Tuesday because authorities weren’t sure if he had taken enough medicine to treat Porter’s condition.
Officials praised those who listened to the Amber Alert and paid attention to the roadside billboards, contacting police with information that allowed them to track down the suspects.
“Police said this is a classic, textbook example of the Amber Alert system working the way that it should work,” according to Krauser. “They said they had a million eyes out there looking, and one set of eyes actually saw this vehicle and alerted state police.”
