ST. LOUIS (AP) — A southern Illinois man is charged with first-degree murder after a toddler under his care died at a St. Louis hospital.

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports that Jarrod Rudder of Elkville, Ill., was charged Monday with two counts of first-degree murder and is being held in the Jackson County, Ill., jail. It wasn’t immediately clear if he had an attorney.

Two-year-old Michael Pulliam died Sunday night at St. Louis Children’s Hospital. He had been hospitalized with bleeding on the brain and several broken bones and contusions.

Authorities say Rudder grabbed Michael’s wrist and swung the child by the arm into a wall and a lamp.
