Hard economic times have left no department unscathed as the Missouri transportation officials have announced that they will be cutting back on the number of times they mow highway medians.

MoDOT says that they will be reallocating the funds it was spending on mowing the medians to what it has deemed as more  important projects.

After crunching the numbers the department has  estimated that it could save over $2 million. St. Louis-area District Engineer Ed Hassinger told KMOX’s Brent Blume that they will use the the money on bridges and roads.

However, the department says the highways will not go completely unkept and they wont allow it to become a safety issue.

Hassinger says  they will groom the medians   before every holiday weekend to accommodate the increase in traffic but says they will just mow strips along  highways  rather than the entire median.
