NEW MADRID, Mo. (AP)- Prosecutors in southeast Missouri have charged five inmates in the death of another inmate at the New Madrid County Jail.
New Madrid County Prosecuting Attorney Lewis Recker filed second-degree murder and first-degree assault charges against five inmates in the death last week of 50-year-old John Wayne Reynolds. A probable cause statement says Reynolds was beaten in a day-room at the jail on Tuesday and was later taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The five inmates charged in Reynolds’ death were arraigned Friday. Bond was set at $1,000,000 for each.
The Sikeston Standard Democrat reports that an autopsy Wednesday determined Reynolds died from a lacerated spleen.
The first-degree assault charges stem from an incident Monday involving another inmate.
