JOPLIN, Mo. (AP)- Joplin is one of six finalists in a contest aimed at naming the nation’s friendliest city.

The Joplin Globe reports that mapmaker Rand McNally will be looking at Joplin this summer as a contender for title of the nation’s friendliest city. Joplin is one of six finalists in the contest. Its competitors for friendliest city are Murray, Ky.; Frisco and College Station, Texas; Cloudcroft, N.M.; and San Luis Obispo, Calif.
There are four other categories: most beautiful, most fun, most patriotic and best food.

Patrick Tuttle, director of the Joplin Convention and Visitor Bureau, said 700 cities applied and 30 finalists were chosen. He says Joplin is the only city in Missouri to be in one of the categories.

The winners will be announced next month.
