PORTAGEVILLE, Mo. (AP) –  A southeast Missouri man is facing charges of second-degree murder in the death of his 1-month-old son.

KFVS-TV reports that 23-year-old Kade Stringfellow of Portageville is charged in the death of Karson Stringfellow.

The baby was injured on July 16 and flown to a St. Louis hospital, where doctors found he had a severe brain injury, four rib fractures, bleeding in the eyes and other injuries.

Karson died on Wednesday.

Police say Kade Stringfellow gave inconsistent stories about what happened to the child.

The St. Louis Children’s Hospital doctor who treated Karson told police that he suspected abuse caused the injuries.

Kade Stringfellow is being held at the New Madrid County Jail.
