SPRINGFIELD, ILL (IRN) – Illinois’ unemployment rate is inching upward. It was 8.9 percent in July, up from 8.7 in June, according to the Illinois Department of Employment Security. The rate was 10.1 percent in July 2011.

“It’s stubborn that the unemployment rate hasn’t been falling more quickly than what we are accustomed to in previous recoveries,” spokesman Greg Rivara said. “But as we have said for more than three years now, this was not a typical recession, and this is not going to be a typical recovery.”

In this report, the state lost a net 7,100 jobs. However, the state gained 800 jobs in the private sector, and lost 7,900 in the government sector, mostly in school districts.

In July, the number of unemployed Illinoisans rose 15,100, to 587,200, the second month in a row that the number of unemployed in Illinois rose after nine months of decline.
