ST. LOUIS, Mo. (KMOX) — In the spring of 2011, shots rang out over a drug deal gone bad in the Clinton-Peabody Complex in south St. Louis.

As bullets began spraying at the fleeing intended target, one hit a 7-year-old girl in the head. She died later as a result of her wound.

What happened that day shook the entire community and brought neighbors together to ensure justice was served.

Circuit Attorney Jenifer Joyce said in Facebook post Friday that justice has been served. A jury found drug dealer, Elvis Smith guilty of 1st Degree Murder and Armed Criminal Action. Today, he was sentenced to life without probation or parole.

“Hardworking police and prosecutors helped make the case, but the most essential piece was witness cooperation,” Joyce said in her post. “Thanks to the members of the community who came forward, Elvis Smith will be held accountable for his actions.”
