ST. LOUIS (KMOX). It’s inevitable. As you pack up your holiday lights this year, you’ll probably have at least one strand that lost it’s twinkle.

Now instead of tossing them in the trash, you can recycle them.

“We found this waste stream that had some value that wasn’t being resourced,” explains Craig Jung, Executive Director of the not-for-profit St. Louis Green.

Four years ago the group launched a holiday light recycling program, collecting six-thousand pounds. Last year they recycled more than ten times that amount.

The lights are ground up, the copper, plastic and glass separated.

“We’re fortunate to have someone who can handle processing copper wire here, so we send our load up there and we get a rebate for that.”

St. Louis Green gives a portion of any proceeds to Operation Food Search.
