ST. LOUIS (KMOX) – Missouri State Sens. John Lamping and Eric Schmitt announced first on KMOX’s “Mark Reardon Show” that they are filing legislation Tuesday afternoon to call the new Mississippi River bridge the “Stan Musial Memorial Bridge.”
They also encouraged members of Cardinal Nation to go to KMOX.com/Stan and sign a petition to urge their colleagues in both Missouri and Illinois to make it happen.
“I think as people make their way across the Mississippi River, into St. Louis, it would be a great welcome from a man who made everyone feel very comfortable,” Schmitt said.
Stan’s family loves the idea.
“He really did connect east and west. When he played, the Cardinals were the west-most team, so he really did connect the country,” Musial grandson Brian Schwarze told KMOX. “That would just such a great honor, to be able to have a bridge named after him.”
Our original story:
The new Mississippi River Bridge is still nameless, although Cardinals fans at this year’s Winter Warm-Up agree naming it after Stan Musial would be a great way to honor the beloved baseball player.
The most common name suggested for the bridge was the Stan Musial Memorial Bridge.
“Stan is deserving of such a monument in St. Louis. I think that ‘Stan The Man’ bridge would be just what this city needed,” one fan said. Another added, “You kind of use the word bridge meaning a bridge, but also a bridge between states, a bridge between people. I think that’s very appropriate.”
In fact, every single St. Louisan KMOX spoke with agreed that Musial is a name more fitting for the bridge than any politician because they “come and go.”
Listen to what fans said:
“I would tell somebody who’d propose that, the same thing I’d tell anybody else: go talk to your legislators,” Missouri Department of Transportation spokesman Andrew Gates said Monday. “They’d be the ones to initiate any proposal for a name on the bridge.”
Lawmakers in both Missouri and Illinois must pass legislation, which, so far, they have failed to do..
Efforts in 2011 to dub it the Costello-Clay Bridge, after two veteran Congressmen, fell short. There have also been suggestions to call it the Women Veterans Memorial Bridge.
If no name is ever made official, Gates said “technically it’ll be the I-70 interstate bridge” over the Mississippi River.
The new bridge should be open to traffic in 2014. The bridge deck should be completed by mid-summer, this year.
