RICHMOND HEIGHTS, MO (KMOX) – A local lawmaker will be among 300 mothers from 30 states lobbying in Washington D.C. today for stricter gun control measures.

“We have no excuses yet. We are demanding action,” Missouri Rep. Stacey Newman, D-Richmond Heights, said.

Newman is taking part in “Moms Take the Hill Day,” sponsored by Moms Demand Action, a group which was formed after the Sandy Hook shooting.

The Democratic representative said no single action is going to solve the gun violence epidemic but a logical first step is universal background checks for all gun sales.

“Forty percent of gun sales are done through unlicensed dealers,” Newman said. “On the internet, at gun shows, where you can walk in, buy an unlimited amount – including all sorts of assault weapons – unlimited amounts of ammunition with no questions asked.”

Newman said the Moms will start their day at the White House then meet with lawmakers on Capitol Hill.
