CARBONDALE, Ill. (AP) – Southern Illinois men’s basketball coach Barry Hinson says he has withdrawn his name from consideration for the coaching vacancy at Texas Tech.

The Salukis’ coach said in a statement Friday that he feels honored and flattered that the Red Raiders approached him about the opening. But Hinson says his heart is in rebuilding the Saluki program, and he submits that effort “continues full-speed ahead.”

Hinson interviewed this week for the Texas Tech job, after Southern Illinois’ athletics director gave the Red Raiders permission to speak with Hinson.

Hinson signed a five-year, roughly $1.5 million contract with the Salukis a year ago.

He guided Southern Illinois in his first season to a 14-17 record, including 6-12 in the Missouri Valley Conference. The Salukis went 8-23 the previous season.
